From a very young age, most of us are taught, that money, or the love of money, is the root of all evil.
This is a belief that deeply permeate our society and it represents a major emotional hurdle for great many people. To claim that the love of anything is the very foundation of evil is a terribly frightening, especially in the mind of a child.
Nevertheless, our culture teaches and we’ve been led to accept, that loving money equals evil.
And yet, all of us would love to have more money. Now doesn’t that seem a bit conflicting? Pursuing money is how we spend most of our waking hours. The act of earning money takes so much of our time that we actually characterize it as what we do.
Now, why in the world would we want to spend so much time and energy pursuing something that we regard as evil?
Many people associate wealth with greed and with selfishness. Many of us view rich people with resentment, not only because of what they have, but because we’re suspicious of who they have hurt on their way to making all that money.
Many of us assume that in order to get rich you got to take advantage of other people. And yet, everybody wants to be wealthy.
Would anyone rather be poor?
Despising rich people and wanting to be rich doesn’t make any sense.
It’s like saying, I despise the members of that club, but gee, I’d sure like to join.
In the book, “The Science of Getting Rich” by Wallace Wattles, it discusses the concept that: Your Right to be Rich is a Noble Cause.
The book argues that:
“There is nothing wrong in wanting to get rich. The desire for riches is really the desire for a richer, fuller and more abundant life; and that desire is praise worthy.”
There are many people who have mixed emotions about money – that it is somehow wrong to want more. In this book, Wallace Wattles completely turns that idea on its head. In fact, he feels that not wanting more is actually abnormal.
His premise is that it is completely natural to want abundance; in essence, this is how we rise to our highest potential. Everyone naturally wants to become all they can be. This is innate within us.
He writes, “It is perfectly right that you should give your best attention to the Science of Getting Rich, for it is the noblest and most necessary of all studies. If you neglect this study, you are derelict in your duty to yourself, to God and humanity; for you can render to God and humanity no greater service than to make the most of yourself.”
This is a compelling example of connecting one’s financial goals to a higher purpose – one of self-actualization, or even to a spiritual purpose as Wallace illustrates. By being the best you can be, you help others become the best they can be.
Are you fully exercising your absolute right to be rich? Are you bringing your full talents and capabilities to the world? If you’re not, what’s holding you back?
Give that some thought, because there is only one of you, and the world needs what only you can uniquely offer.
