Hi Dra. Pinky, I am 2 months pregnant as of the moment. Will I be qualified to get in getting the maternity benefit if I gave birth on April 2020?
Answer:
SSS Rules state that: The maternity benefit is offered only to female SSS members. A member is qualified to avail of this benefit if:
- She has paid at least three monthly contributions within the 12-month period immediately preceding the semester of her childbirth or miscarriage.
- She has given the required notification of her pregnancy to SSS through her employer if employed; or submitted the maternity notification directly to the SSS if separated from employment, a voluntary or self-employed member.
To be able to know if you are qualified to get maternity benefit from SSS, look at the steps below to be able to know if you are qualified or not.
Step 1: Know your EDC (Expected Date of Confinement or Delivery). This is from your Obstetrician or from your first ultrasound.
For example:
Your EDC is April 1, 2020. See highlighted below.
Step 2: Strike out the quarter where your EDC falls, and the quarter before that (these are not included). Highlight the two quarters before that. These quarters will be the ones that will be included in the computation if you are qualified to receive a maternity benefit from SSS.
The highlighted rows are the months you should have contributed to SSS to be qualified; you need at least 3 out of 6.
3 out of 6 contributions will entitle you to minimum benefits.
6 out of 6 contributions will entitle you to maximum benefits.
Step 3: Make sure you have contributed to the required months (highlighted rows) to be qualified in getting the Maternity benefits.
You see, the contribution should happen a year before your EDC (Expected date of delivery). That’s why it is important that if you are a Female in the childbearing age, you are actively contributing to SSS in case you become pregnant (in anticipation).

Can I still get maternity benefits on self contribution?
Yes
Pwedi pa rin po ba ako mag apply ng maternity benefits kahit na last 2017 pa po yung last payment ko..

This is confusing. In step 1, you mentioned “Your EDC is August 1, 2020” but the highlighted month is April 2020.
Yes already corrected the post. thank you.
I already have 7 months contributions in SSS. Would I be qualified for the maternity benifits if I give birth this comming Sept 2020?
Please check the sample in the blog. I don’t know what months you contributed.
Pano Kung January 2020 nanganak
Depende po kung kelan kayo naghulog.
Edd ko na po sa april doc pinky ask ko lng po kung ano pong qualified months ang dapat nahulugan ko. may hulog po ako simula nung jan.-july 2019 salamat po godbless
i think yes. but to be sure, call SSS hot line or visit their branch so they can look to your records.
Hi doc. Nag file po kasi ako ng Mat 1 ko, employed po ako pero hindi po sa employer ko finile yung mat 1, sa sss branch samin ko pinasa. Nag self employed po ako kasi mag reresign sana ako, pero i decided not to resign na muna. Pwede pa rin ba ipasa sa emplyer yung mat 1 ko after i gave birth? Manganganak na po ako sa may 2020.
Sorry for the late reply. I hope naging ok na kayo? You can call SSS hotline for this.
I notified Sss about my maternity online on my 30th weeks of pregnancy due to covid 19 lockdown. I am a voluntary member. I am about to give birth on june 2. Am I still qualified for maternity benefit if I file Mat 1 late? I am so worried specially on this kind of siyuation.
